Where In The World Is Diego Garcia?!

I found out over the weekend that my son Paul is going to be stationed at Diego Garcia.

Diego Garcia is the largest atoll, in terms of land area, in Chagos Archipelago, part of the British Indian Ocean Territory. The island is located in the Indian Ocean, about 1,600 km (1,000 mi) south of the southern coast of India.[1] (For the complete Wikipedia entry click here.)

So he'll be pretty much in the middle of nowhere, but it looks like a cool place to be.

All of a sudden I was thrown back in to that terrible "paramecium/amoeba" confusion again..

that's a place people LIVE?

No, civilians are not allowed there. There is only military there now.

Wow, the things ya just don't know 'till there's a reason to know it. Feel kinda bad for the Chagossians, not sure how I would feel if someone took over my state and told me I had to live somewhere else. The arial shots are amazing so I went to Google Earth, had a little trouble at first but it is pretty cool looking at it up close. The beaches are amazing, At least they are from the satelite view.

Hope your son, Paul enjoys his time there. What does he do in the Navy?

He is an Electronics Technician. He will be maintaining the radar for the air traffic there.

I'm trying to find a cool background for it... but no luck so far. Oh, Paul will be there about 17 months.

It does sound like a cool place to be but boy oh boy, momma has to be REALLY ready to cut the apron strings! Gosh, I can't imagine having my son so far away from me... but he is seven. They grow up fast though, huh?

Have a great week next week!
